One ancestor. Four voices. A legacy rooted in the last known survivor of the transatlantic slave trade in the United States.
Four sisters, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Gwendolyn, and Deborah, are both educators and descendants who carry the legacy of their great grandmother, Matilda, the youngest passenger and last survivor of the Clotilda, through America’s ongoing struggle with racial injustice. Infused with Matilda’s strength, their stories span from the chains of slavery to the triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement. As educators, they are committed to preserving and sharing this history, ensuring that Matilda’s story continues to inform and inspire future generations. This narrative is a testament to resilience, hope, and the unyielding pursuit of freedom, highlighting their unwavering spirit in the fight for equal rights. A homage to sisterhood and the power of collective voices, their story illuminates a path from enduring sorrow to a more hopeful future.
